Wednesday's market paid for order books and ignored income statements. Nvidia guided its gross margin down and rose four percent anyway, on a backlog it disclosed an hour after the release. Price is following what has been ordered rather than what has been earned. The exception is Copper, a custodian bid at a tenth of its last mark, because nobody pays for a book that disintermediation ends.
The indexes did nothing on Wednesday, the S&P 500 near 7,675 and the Nasdaq near 26,130, both a hair from flat. Gold fell to $4,597.75 while the ten-year backed up about four basis points to 4.67 percent, and metal falling as the yield rises rules out an inflation scare. Crude slipped below $80 for WTI, near $79.50 on vendor readings rather than official settles, a fourth straight session lower as Iran and Oman talked about a corridor through Hormuz. Ether firmed about one percent while bitcoin sat still near $78,400 for a third session, which is rotation inside crypto rather than money arriving.
Corporate profits rose $400.9 billion last quarter against $74.4 billion the quarter before, while July's real consumer spending rose $1.3 billion, less than a tenth of a percent. That is not a contradiction: aggregate profit is a residual, what the accounts leave over once investment, the deficit, net exports and saving are counted, and household spending is not a source term. The payers are in the same release, business investment up 8.4 percent and $1.8 trillion borrowed by the government in ten months. We expect the profit share to hold while investment and the deficit hold, and to turn when one of them does rather than when the consumer tires. It has broken before: the deficit went from about 2 percent of output in 2006 to near 12 in 2009 and margins stayed near 16, because saving enters Michal Kalecki's identity with a minus sign. A number forced by an identity reports the flows of its counterparties, not the conduct of whoever's name is on it.
Scramble a clause, strip the endings that mark who did what, and hand someone the pieces: across 484 English and Russian speakers, people put the subject back in the right place about 89 percent of the time. So the machinery that marks who acted on whom is strictly necessary in roughly one clause in eight, and the two cases it exists for are clauses where either noun could plausibly have acted and clauses describing something unexpected. Before cutting a review step or a standing meeting, do not count how often it fired. Name the case it exists for, then count how often that case occurs.
Isabelle Crevecoeur measured the inner ear in 148 individuals spanning 44,000 to 3,000 years ago and found the foragers continuous for 40,000 years, then sharply distinct from the farmers who follow. Inner-ear shape tracks ancestry and survives where heat destroyed the ancient DNA, so prehistory that looked permanently unreadable is now readable.
Whether a substance melts turns out to be a property of the company it keeps, not of the substance.
Utrecht researchers found the Atlantic overturning circulation collapsing at 2 degrees of warming under fast forcing and surviving to 5.5 under a slow ramp, so a limit you can breach at any temperature replaces one you could budget against.
“People's nature is bad. Their goodness is a matter of deliberate effort.”
– Xunzi, "Human Nature Is Bad," trans. Eric L. Hutton (2001)
You have probably assumed that becoming yourself means clearing things away. Drop the obligations, quiet the noise, strip off the performance, and the real one underneath gets some air. Xunzi thought there was nothing underneath, and that the parts of your character you actually like were installed from outside.
Sit with how much that reverses. The version of you that shows up at work, which you privately consider the performance, is probably the most reliably good version there is, because it is the one with a structure holding it up.
Today's practice: write the three things you would say if someone asked who you are. Beside each, name the outside form that installed it, a job, a coach, an obligation you resented at the time. Cross out any you cannot trace to one, and notice whether that feels like losing something.
The Sargasso Sea is the only sea on Earth with no coastline, two million square miles of the North Atlantic edged by four circling currents. Sailors have known where it is for five centuries and nobody can stake it, because its edge depends on what you are counting: for eels it is where they spawn, for plastic where the water converges.
Drawing a system's boundary decides three things at once: what counts as internal feedback, what counts as an external shock, and what counts as somebody else's problem. A factory that treats its supplier as external takes a price rise as a shock to absorb; one that draws the boundary around the supply relationship gets a loop it can act on. So draw the smallest boundary holding both the thing you want to fix and the lever that fixes it, because if those sit on opposite sides of your line, you have found the actual problem.
