Charles Elton argued in 1958 that a species-rich habitat should repel invaders, and nobody had settled it. Jiliang Hu, in Jeff Gore's lab at MIT, built hundreds of miniature bacterial communities and dropped a new species into each. It has a mood pretending to be one.

In 1668 a London printer named Fabian Stedman wrote three rules for ringing church bells: start and end in descending order, never repeat an arrangement, never move a bell more than one place. On seven bells those rules permit exactly 5,040 arrangements and about three hours of continuous labour. Nobody memorises 5,040 rows. Each ringer memorises where their own bell goes next, and the sequence assembles itself out of people following private instructions, none of whom sees the whole. Complexity in the output does not imply complexity in the generator. So when behaviour looks too intricate to model, state it as a rule one participant could follow blind. If running that in your head reproduces what you see, every lever is inside the sentence.
