Neither alone explains a broad selloff. The thing underneath does: three-figure oil and a labor market that will not crack have forced the rate regime from the cuts it priced in winter to a hike by December, and that repricing is what marked down equities, drove UK gilts to a G7 high, lifted the 10-year, and pinned the crypto bid. The escalation and the capex are irreversible; the rate regime is why they are contagious, and the FOMC meets next week into a shock it cannot control and a labor market it cannot call weak.
Equities took the hardest damage in the megacaps, the Nasdaq down 1.9% against the S&P's 1.2%, the growth leaders now leading the retreat. Brent settled above the century mark while gold eased toward $4,044, one supply shock bidding energy as real yields taxed the haven. The bipartisan bill to lift the FAA's 1973 ban on civilian supersonic flight over land cleared the Senate Commerce Committee, after already passing the House by voice vote. Boom Supersonic's XB-1 demonstrator and Spike Aerospace's S-512 are the nearest commercial candidates. The binding constraint was never the engineering; it was the flat prohibition on sonic booms over land, which the bill would replace with a noise-standard framework. Half a century after Concorde was boxed onto ocean routes, the physics stopped being the problem and the statute became the only thing left to change.
Security analyst Peter Zeihan argues that deep-cover sleeper cells are economically irrational. Training a world-class intelligence agent costs roughly what an astronaut or an F-35 pilot costs, a price only an assassination or a mass-casualty mission could justify, not the routine gathering that cheaper, shorter-term operatives do better. Iris Murdoch argued that we act rightly "when the time comes" not by strength of will but because of the quality of attention we have built through unremarkable daily practice. For her, good attention means a self trained to look outward and see reality clearly; the self is still present, only refined. Simone Weil agreed with the premise and radicalized the conclusion. She used the word decreation for what she thought attention actually required: the complete emptying of the self, so the situation could be seen without the distortion of your own needs, fears, and identity coloring it. Any self-regard in the act of looking, she argued, contaminates what you see.
The tension is not academic. When you attend to a struggling colleague, a deteriorating position, a relationship that needs repair, are you bringing your full cultivated self, your earned judgment and practiced compassion, or are you trying to get your self out of the way so you can see what is actually there rather than what you want, fear, or expect to see? One says the self is the instrument of good attention. The other says the self is the obstacle.
Most of us default to Murdoch because it is livable; Weil's demand for self-evacuation slides toward an asceticism few sustain. But Weil's challenge carries an edge that Murdoch's gentler version lacks: every time you are certain you see a situation clearly, you may be seeing yourself projected onto it.
Today's practice: pick one decision you are certain about right now. Write down the single fact that would prove you wrong, then go looking for that fact today. If you notice you would rather not look, that reluctance is the projection Weil is warning you about.
In 2006 NASA flew an antenna that looked like a mistake: a single bent wire, no symmetry, no logic an engineer would draw. A genetic algorithm produced it, mutating thousands of candidates against the only thing that mattered, performance. It was ugly, illegible, and better than anything the humans built by hand; tidied into something sensible, it performed worse. A thing can be aesthetically true, elegant and legible, or functionally true, working under real conditions whatever it looks like. A system shaped by selection, whether evolution, markets, or trial and error, is optimized only for surviving contact with reality, so it keeps whatever works, including structure nobody can explain. So before you improve something that already works, ask whether the ugliness is a defect or a load-bearing wall. In a domain you fully understand, elegance is a real signal; in one shaped by selection or long exposure to reality, assume the mess is doing work you cannot see.
