“Status is something you do, not something you are.”
Keith Johnstone was a theatre director solving a narrow problem: why did his actors' scenes feel dead even when the dialogue was fine? The words were never the point. Underneath every exchange runs a second conversation nobody names, a constant negotiation of status carried in signals people do not know they send: who fills the silence, whose sentences firm up and whose trail off. Status is not rank; a janitor can play high status to a chief executive. It is something you do, not a position you hold.
The assumption most people carry is that they choose their words and the words carry the weight. Invert it. You are choosing almost nothing about your status, and it carries more than anything you say. The person who over-explains is playing low; the one who leaves a pause and lets another rush to fill it is playing high. Most people run one default everywhere and mistake it for personality, when it is only a habit the body learned so early it feels like identity.
What Johnstone hands you is a dial you did not know you had. In a tense meeting the reflex is to change what you say. Change your status instead, and watch the room reorganize around the same words.
Today's practice: pick one interaction today and deliberately play the opposite of your default. If you fill silences and soften your statements, leave a pause and let it sit. If you hang back, take up the space without the hedge. Do not change the argument, only your status, and watch the same words land differently.
In 1993 a neuroscientist found crayfish sensed a faint water-current pulse better when he added random noise to the tank: signal identical, disturbance additional, detection improved. The principle is stochastic resonance: a system with a detection threshold performs best not in silence but at an optimal level of noise. Too little and the signal never crosses; too much and noise drowns it. At the sweet spot, random pushes lift a sub-threshold signal over the line and average out, while the recurring signal builds. When a detector keeps missing something faint, the reflex is a sharper sensor. Test the opposite: add a measured dose of randomness, a rotation into an unfamiliar team, a paper from another field. If the signal sat above the threshold, the noise only hurts; if below, it was the only thing that could reveal it.
