The diagnostic: if your experiments keep returning the answer "wrong" with no indication of which part is wrong, you're testing monolithically. Redesign the test so each attempt isolates one variable and yields a binary answer about that variable alone. In practice: don't pilot a complex strategy and ask "did it work?" Break it into components, test each component's contribution independently, and only assemble the full system from components that have already passed their own tests.
